What industry experience?
Well, I’m glad you asked.
I graduated from the University of Western Australia in 2013 with First Class Honours in Mechanical Engineering. Yep… I was a smarty pants. After graduating, I worked for three years in the Oil and Gas industry for an EPCM company called Technip.
I held various roles during my time at Technip: systems engineer, “nerd who builds models”, piping stress engineer, and stressed piping engineer. Haha just kidding about that last one. Piping stress analysis is fun!
My main role however, was a Package Design Engineer.
Not packaging. Packages. As in equipment packages.
You know, diesel generators, pumps, compressors… complicated (and expensive) stuff that go BOOM if you don’t design them properly. This means I won’t have any trouble understanding how your complicated product works unless it’s literally rocket science.
As a package engineer, it was my responsibility to coordinate the proper design and timely delivery of these packages with engineers from other disciplines, project managers, planners, and procurement officers.
I know how to communicate with the practical no-nonsense types in the engineering industry.
Engineering Words that Sell
My peers always considered me to be a bit strange. While engineers are generally more comfortable with numbers, I actually enjoy writing.
But what got me into copywriting?
It’s no secret that to succeed in business, you have to understand sales and marketing. Copywriting is a big part of that because essentially, it’s salesmanship in print.
As soon as I discovered direct response copywriting and read about legends like Gary Halbert, Eugene Schwartz, and Bob Bly who generated millions in sales by writing words on a page, I. Was. Hooked. I HAD to learn the skill.
So I started taking copywriting courses from American Writers and Artists Inc. (AWAI). Eventually, I decided to focus more on writing for the Business-to-Business (B2B) market due to my background. If you’re an engineering service provider or equipment manufacturer, this means I know how to write copy specifically for your target audience: business buyers. The last thing you want is to pay a lot of money for an experienced copywriter who writes in the business-to-consumer (B2C) style.
When I’m not honing my craft…
Aside from copywriting, my other interests include trading, bitcoin, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and metaphysics.
Trading as in the stock market and cryptocurrencies.
Metaphysics as in phenomena beyond physics. Things science hasn’t been able to explain yet.
The Mind. Spirituality. Energy. That kinda stuff.
What can I say, I’m a simple guy who enjoys complicated things.
Oh and I also like travelling. Especially to Japan.
Yes, anyone who knows me personally knows I’m a big fan of bitcoin.
I’m not gonna bother extolling the virtues of bitcoin here. Let’s just say our hunter gatherer ancestors who came across GOLD probably didn’t think much of it. I mean, you can’t eat gold and it’s not very useful. It’s just shiny and rare. Bitcoin’s not even shiny.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling based martial art that focuses on ground fighting. I’ve been training and competing in BJJ for 8 years so you could say I enjoy it.
Right now, I’m a purple belt, which probably doesn’t mean anything if you don’t know about BJJ… but I’m just answering the commonly asked question of “what belt are you?”. See, told you I’m a copywriter.
